Orange Kheer might be a new thing for you altogether but it is a dessert which can give you more than what you expect. A sweet and sour preparation has the base as Sweet Kheer. It really seemed impossible earlier and I was skeptical about even trying it. But, the Orange cake that I made recently gave me some confidence as to sour and sweet can be combined to bring out a new taste.
It is difficult to explain the final taste of Orange Kheer, but it is definitely sweet and sour . The texture of the Kheer will be felt when you chew the small Orange chunks while feeling sweet in the background.
And yes, do not worry about the milk getting spoiled during the process. Some of you might feel that the sour liquids are generally used to spoil milk and the same would happen here as well. I am not the expert on the actual chemical reactions happening inside but our experiments have shown that this recipe is safe to follow
Try it once and I am sure you will end up eating the whole bowl yourself!

Cook time:
Total time:
Yield: 1 bowl Orange Kheer (1 serving)
Ingredients
- 1 Orange
- 1 Cup (Our 1 Cup = 240 ML) Milk
- 4 Sliced Almonds
- 1 Tsp Pistachio (Pista)
- 4 Tsp Sugar
- 1/4 Tsp Cardamom Powder
Method
- Add Milk, Cardamom Powder and Sugar in a pan. Keep the stove on high flame and bring it to a boil.
- After a boil, turn the stove on low flame. Let it cook for 10 minutes.
- Peel Orange’s outer skin to bring out the Orange slices. We need to peel it further to extract the actual orange chunks (Pulp). Collect the pulp of Orange in a small bowl. Remember to remove any seeds that you encounter on the way. Keep it aside for later use.
- After 10 minutes of cooking milk, add chopped Almonds and Pistachio in milk pan. Switch off the stove. Keep it aside to cool down at room temperature.
- 10 minutes of cooking milk will make it a bit more creamy and thick. This process is generally known as milk condensation. We call it Doodh Kadhna in Hindi.
- If you like more thick milk in your Kheer, you can increase the total time to 15 minutes here. We have done it for 10 minutes and we feel it is sufficient for us.
- Once milk cools down, add Orange pulp in milk. Mix well.
- Yes, That’s it. Orange Kheer is ready to serve.
Note: Serve it chilled only. You can also chill it in a refrigerator. Do not re-heat the kheer before serving.
