Sunday or ya monday, roz khao andey!! ( Meaning – Monday or Sunday, Eat eggs everyday )
Remember this famous egg jingle? Eating eggs everyday is a good habit as they are good source of proteins but have you ever wondered if the egg you are eating is good for eating?
What i mean to say is have you ever seen an expiry date on eggs? Is the egg you are eating good or has expired?
If you are in India, 99% of you would say NO. Others who buy eggs from hi-end grocery stores might have seen it.
Putting an expiry or best by date on eggs is a common trend in developed countries but developing nations do not seem to care about it.
But the health of people is important in both cases. Hence, you should not consume eggs which have expired.
Here is a simple test which you can perform to check if an egg is good or bad (has expired).
- Fill a bowl with fresh cold water deep enough to submerge the egg you want to check.
- Carefully release an egg into the bowl of water.
- Depending on the freshness of the egg, the egg will either sink to the bottom, float to the top or hold itself somewhere in between.
- The freshest eggs sink to the bottom and stay there. Eggs that float, but remain submerged, are marginal. Once an egg begins to bob around in the water, throw it away.
NOTE: It has also been observed that FROZEN eggs will float irrespective of whether its fresh or bad. So, it is advised that you bring the eggs at normal room temperature before running through the above test.
Also, if you have eaten the bad egg, there is no need to panic. You should see your family doctor to get the proper medication.
Symptoms of bad egg eating
- Food poisoning
- Restlessness

It is good to eat eggs everyday but with care.
